SASANIAN KINGS. Narseh, 293-303. Drachm (Silver, 26 mm, 3.89 g, 4 h). Draped bust of Narseh to right, wearing a crown with arcades and korymbos; around, ‘mzdysn bgy nrshy MRKAn MRKA ʾyrʾn MNW ctry MN yzdʾn’ = ‘mazdēsn bay Narseh šāhān šāh Ērān kē čihr az yaz(a)dān’ (‘The Mazda-worshipping Lord Narseh, King of Kings of the Iranians, whose essence is from the gods’ in deteriorated Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar flanked by two attendants, both wearing mural crowns, the left with korymbos; the symbol of ‘frawahr’, the guardian spirit of kingship and the emblem of the royal treasury, in the upper field to the left of the flames; the Taurus-symbol to the right of the flames; to right and left, ‘NWRA ZY ˗ nrshy’ = ‘ādur ī Narseh’ (‘Fire of Narseh’ in deteriorated Pahlavi). Göbl type II/2. SNS II, type Ia/2a. Toned. Scratches and traces of overstriking, otherwise, very fine.
